A horseback ride in the Crete Senesi
classical country riding at ASD Il Destriero, among the clay ridges and white roads of the Crete Senesi
The stables sit at the end of a white road between Buonconvento and la Befa, and this is not a nose-to-tail tourist ride: you start in the panoramic school with the instructor, you find your seat, and only then do you head out into the hills. An hour is enough for a first time. Anyone who already rides can stay in the saddle for half a day or a full one, with a stop for pecorino.
Getting there
- The provincial road via San Quirico d'Orcia, then signs for Buonconvento
- Ordinary road all the way, no narrow or steep stretches
- Parking in the yard at the stables, room enough for a long vehicle

Notes
- Gaby, the instructor, is the long-standing point of reference of the school
- Anglo-Arab and Murgese horses, out loose on the hills in summer
- The panoramic school first, so you gain confidence before going out
- In summer it is better to ride early in the morning, with 25-35 degrees in the middle of the day; in winter there is a risk of fog
- On the longer treks there can be a stop for pecorino and cinta senese salami
- The youngest ride the ponies, in line on the path across the field
