Cookies, and why we don't ask you to accept them

You won't find a window to dismiss before you can read. That isn't an oversight: that window is needed when a site installs cookies that serve the site and not you, and here there are none.

Which cookies there actually are

  • NEXT_LOCALE: remembers the language you are reading, so that coming back to the site you don't find yourself in another one. It lasts as long as the browser session and disappears when you close it
  • The session cookie, which arrives only if you register: it is the one that keeps you signed in after you have entered. If you have no profile, this cookie does not exist

Both are technical cookies: without the first the site would speak to you in the wrong language, without the second you would have to sign in again on every page. For cookies of this kind the law does not require consent, and that is why you will not find a window asking for it.

What isn't here

  • No third-party cookies, and no requests to third-party domains while you read: the typefaces are the ones on your device, the map background comes from our own server, and there is no advertising or social script
  • No tracking across different sites, and no commercial profile
  • Nothing saved in the browser's storage: the site uses neither localStorage nor sessionStorage

Visit statistics

We collect them with Umami, installed on our own machine. It uses no cookies and keeps nothing that would let anyone recognise you: we know how many people read a page or signed up, not who.

If you want to delete them anyway

Every browser lets you see and delete a site's cookies, usually from the privacy settings. If you delete ours, the language will go back to the default and, if you had signed in, you will have to do it again.

Which data we handle, and how

To find out which data we collect and what we do with it there is the privacy policy, the page next to this one.
