Udine is covered on foot in a day, around a hill raised by hand in the Bronze Age, with the castle on top. For two centuries it was the residence of the patriarchs of Aquileia and the capital of the Patria del Friuli, the patriarchs' state; from 1420 it belonged to Venice, and it shows: piazza della Libertà, with the Loggia del Lionello in bands of white and pink stone, the portico of San Giovanni and the Torre dell'Orologio, the clock tower with two Moors striking the hours, is called the most beautiful Venetian square on the mainland. From the Arco Bollani you climb to the castle, with the Galleria d'arte antica, the gallery of old masters, and the Salone del Parlamento, and from the hill you see the plain as far as the Julian Alps. The city's painter is Giambattista Tiepolo, who here, at thirty, frescoed the Palazzo Patriarcale, the patriarchs' palace, today the Museo Diocesano, and who came back for the Oratorio della Purità; until 17 January 2027 his Last Judgement is also in the castle. The life of the city goes on under the arcades of via Mercatovecchio and in piazza Matteotti, which the people of Udine call San Giacomo, and in the osterie, where in the middle of the morning you drink the tajut. From Udine it is half an hour to Cividale, the first city of the Lombards in Italy, to Palmanova, the star-shaped fortress, to San Daniele, the town of prosciutto, and to Villa Manin, where Napoleon lived in the weeks of the treaty of Campoformido. The motorhome stays in the Comune's small area behind the hospital, with bus 1 into the centre.

Stops and overnight stays

In Udine the Comune has six places for motorhomes in a corner of the large car park of piazzale Padre Cesario da Rovigo, north of the centre next to the hospital, free, with water filling and emptying, and you stop for at most 48 hours; you go down into the centre on bus 1. Closer to piazza della Libertà there is SSM's Moretti car park, a quarter of an hour away on foot, where for 2 euros a day you can leave the motorhome at night too, but without services. Anyone who wants electricity and showers goes to Fagagna, to the Borgo Terra campsite, about twelve kilometres away in the hills towards San Daniele.

There is no separate tap for rinsing the toilet cassette. 160 metres away, at the Chiusaforte terminus, urban bus 1 starts, which passes the hospital and goes down into the centre; according to travellers, in October 2026, one comes every ten minutes. On foot, piazza della Libertà is about twenty minutes away. A bakery is three hundred metres away. Since September 2026 the car park has had cameras. In September 2026 travellers found it quiet at night and half empty in the evening, with the motorhome places so narrow that new arrivals parked crosswise; on a weekday at the beginning of October it was full

Getting around

Getting around

Udine is covered on foot: from piazza della Libertà to the castle, to piazza Matteotti and to the Duomo it is a few minutes, and the heart of the centre is a pedestrian area or a limited traffic zone with cameras. The motorhome stays at the Comune's area, to the north, or at the Moretti car park, to the west, and you go into the centre by bus or on foot. From 15 October to 31 March, except over the Christmas holidays, older diesels without a particulate filter may not circulate inside the ring road in the late afternoon.

  • You arrive by the A23 motorway Palmanova-Tarvisio, exits Udine Sud and Udine Nord. Anyone coming from Venice or Trieste on the A4 takes the A23 north at the Palmanova interchange; anyone coming down from Austria arrives from Tarvisio on the same A23. The Comune's area is in the districts to the north, behind the hospital, handy from Udine Nord; the Moretti car park is west of the centre, outside the inner ring road
  • Inside the walls a motorhome has no reason to go. The historic centre is the ZTL Centro, a limited traffic zone valid 24 hours a day and monitored by cameras, with a 30 km/h limit, and its heart, from via Mercatovecchio to piazza Matteotti, is a pedestrian area, closed to all motor vehicles at any hour; piazza della Libertà and the climb to the castle need a separate permit. Permits from the Polizia Locale, the municipal police, must be requested at least 72 hours ahead, and are not meant for visitors
  • The anti-smog bans, from the Comune's 2014 ordinance implementing the municipal action plan, which the Comune still gives as in force: from 15 October to 7 December and from 7 January to 31 March, from 16:00 to 20:00, inside the city ring road, the ring (viale Osoppo, viale della Vittoria, viale Trieste, viale Leopardi, viale Ciconi, viale Tullio, via Marangoni, viale Volpe and the others), whose roads remain open, Euro 0 and 1 petrol vehicles and Euro 0 to Euro 3 diesels without a particulate filter may not circulate. Allowed to circulate are LPG or methane vehicles running on gas, hybrids and electric vehicles, and anyone going to a hotel with a booking. From 8 December to 6 January there are no bans. In Friuli Venezia Giulia there are no regional bans on Euro 4 and Euro 5 diesels as there are in the Po valley
  • SSM's multi-storey car parks around the centre all have car height limits: Andreuzzi 2.30 metres, piazza Primo Maggio 2.10, Moretti, Magrini, Caccia and Tribunale 2.05, Venerio 1.95. A motorhome fits only in the open-air area of the Moretti. The blue bays are paid Monday to Saturday from 8:00 to 13:00 and from 14:30 to 20:00
  • The city buses belong to TPL FVG, the regional network run in Udine by Arriva Udine. Line 1 passes the Comune's area, from the Chiusaforte terminus towards the hospital, the centre and Gervasutta. According to TPL FVG, in 2026, the urban ticket costs 1.50 euros for 60 minutes, 1.85 euros for 75 minutes, and on public holidays it is valid for four hours; the day ticket 3.35 euros, and it is valid on all the urban networks of the region if you ask for it when buying. You buy it on board by holding a contactless card to the validator, with the TPL FVG app or by text message to 4850850 writing UD
  • The trains: Udine station is south of the centre, in viale Europa Unita, less than a kilometre from piazza della Libertà, with regional trains for Trieste, Gorizia and Venice, and the MI.CO.TRA., the train of the Ferrovie Udine Cividale that goes to Tarvisio and to Villach in Austria with bicycles on board, four runs a day. To Cividale you cannot go by train at the moment: the line of the Ferrovie Udine Cividale is closed for works on the infrastructure, and the runs, more than forty a day, are made by replacement buses, which leave from viale Europa Unita 22-24, in front of the station; bicycles are not carried on the buses
  • LPG: among the filling stations in the city, the Q8 in via Mentana, a few minutes from the Moretti car park, the Eni in via del Cotonificio, to the north-west, the closest to the Comune's area, and the IP in viale Palmanova, to the south-east, on the road to the motorway at Udine Sud
  • For the surroundings: Cividale del Friuli is to the east, about twenty kilometres on state road 54; Palmanova to the south, on state road 352, which continues to Grado; San Daniele del Friuli to the north-west, by way of Fagagna; Gorizia to the south-east, on state road 56 through Manzano; Carnia to the north, by the A23 to the Carnia exit or by the Pontebbana, state road 13, through Gemona and Tolmezzo

Seeing

Sights

The centre takes a day on foot, starting from piazza della Libertà and climbing to the castle, then down through piazza Primo Maggio towards the Palazzo Patriarcale and the Duomo, and back along via Mercatovecchio and piazza Matteotti, as far as the districts of the rogge, the old water channels, and the Tempio Ossario. A second day is needed for Villa Manin or for Castelmonte, with Cividale. Before setting off it is worth putting the days in order: the Civici Musei close on Mondays, the Museo Diocesano and the Museo del Duomo on Tuesdays, the Museo Etnografico Monday to Wednesday. Up to 18 the Civici Musei are free, and a family with an underage child pays the reduced price for everyone; the Museo Diocesano can be visited only by booking. Piazza della Libertà and the Loggia del Lionello

Square · free entry · 46.06349, 13.23589

piazza della Libertà, 33100 Udine (UD)

the oldest square in the city, below the castle hill, called "the most beautiful Venetian square on the mainland". In the Middle Ages it was the Plasse dal Vin, the wine square; in 1350 the council house stood here, then under Venice it took the name of piazza Contarena, from the lieutenant Marco Antonio Contarini, and after the Second World War today's name. On the lower side is the Loggia del Lionello, the Venetian Gothic town hall in bands of white and pink stone, decided by the council on 24 January 1441 and built from 1448 to 1457 to a design by the goldsmith Nicolò Lionello; a fire destroyed it in 1876 and it was rebuilt by Andrea Scala to the original drawings. It is still the town hall. On the raised terrace opposite: the column of 1539 with the lion of Saint Mark (the lion is from 1883), the Renaissance fountain, the statues of Hercules and Cacus, and the Monumento alla Pace, the peace monument, by Giovanni Battista Comolli, finished in 1812 to commemorate the Treaty of Campoformido and placed here by the Austrians in 1818. Children can be asked to find how many lions of Saint Mark there are between the square, the tower and the Arco Bollani

The portico of San Giovanni and the Torre dell'Orologio

Monument · free entry · 46.06369, 13.23592

piazza della Libertà, 33100 Udine (UD)

opposite the Loggia del Lionello, the portico and the church of San Giovanni, rebuilt after the earthquake of 1511 by Bernardino da Morcote and finished in 1533. The church was an archive, then a guardhouse of the Austrians, and since 1926, to a design by Raimondo D'Aronco, it has been the Pantheon dei Caduti, the shrine to the fallen of the Great War, with the Victory by Aurelio Mistruzzi under the dome. At the end of the portico there is a sundial from 1798: a bronze sun with a hole, which at the equinoxes sends the beam onto the inscriptions on the floor. Above the portico rises the Torre dell'Orologio, the clock tower, from 1527, to a design by Giovanni da Udine, a pupil of Raphael, who copied the one in piazza San Marco in Venice: at the top two Moors strike the hours on the bell, and today's copper ones are from 1852, replacing the wooden originals. It is worth being there on the hour

The Arco Bollani and the climb to the castle

Monument · free entry · 46.06379, 13.23566

salita al Castello, 33100 Udine (UD)

the arch that opens the climb to the castle, built in 1556 by the Venetian lieutenant Domenico Bollani and attributed to Andrea Palladio: the work began in April 1556 and finished four months later, when the lion of Saint Mark with copper wings was hoisted on top. From the arch the paved road climbs under the portico of the Lippomano, from 1487, long and Gothic, set against the hill, up to Santa Maria di Castello. It is a short but steep climb; for those who do not walk it there is a lift that takes you to the top of the hill

4

Santa Maria di Castello

Church · 46.06468, 13.23667

colle del Castello, 33100 Udine (UD)

the oldest church in Udine, on the hill, born as the church of the patriarchs' castle. Inside, in the apse, are the fourteenth-century frescoes of an anonymous master, with a Deposition in which Nicodemus climbs the ladder, a way of painting that comes from Carinthia and Styria more than from Venice. On the bell tower stands the angel, which according to the fifteenth-century plan was to converse with a Madonna on the bell tower of the Duomo, in an Annunciation from one end of the city to the other: the Duomo's bell tower remained stumpy and the Madonna never went up. Next to the church is the Casa della Confraternita, the confraternity house, Gothic, from the fifteenth century, with the exhibitions of the Civici Musei on the ground floor, and the Arco Grimani of 1522, brought here from via Portanuova in 1902, through which you enter the open space. On the lawn at the top is the Casa della Contadinanza, where the representatives of the peasants of the Patria del Friuli sat: it is the 1931 copy of a sixteenth-century palace demolished in the city in 1928, and on the ground floor there is a café. From the open space you see the whole plain, and on clear days the mountains

The castle and the Galleria d'arte antica

Castle · paid entry · 46.06441, 13.23607

piazzale Patria del Friuli 1, 33100 Udine (UD)

the patriarchs' castle collapsed in the earthquake of 26 March 1511; today's, more a palace than a fortress, was begun on 2 April 1517 to a design by Giovanni Fontana and continued from 1547 by Giovanni da Udine and Francesco Floreani; it has been a museum since 26 July 1906. On the main floor is the Galleria d'arte antica, the gallery of old masters, thirteen rooms in order of time from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century, which also tell the story of the city: the eighteenth-century views of piazza Contarena, the seventeenth-century bird's-eye plan of Udine, the Madonna della Loggia by Pordenone, paid for in 1516, the altarpiece of the Blood of Christ by Vittore Carpaccio, the Saint Francis receiving the stigmata attributed to Caravaggio, which arrived in 1911, and the canvases by Tiepolo, among them Virtue and Nobility triumphing over Ignorance and the Consilium in arena. In the centre is the Salone del Parlamento, where the parliament of the Patria del Friuli, clergy, nobles and communities, met until 1797: the walls are entirely frescoed by Pomponio Amalteo, Giovanni Battista Grassi and Francesco Floreani, and the frieze on the south wall is by Tiepolo. Until 17 January 2027, in the Aldo Rizzi room, there is Giambattista Tiepolo's Last Judgement, a large canvas of 1730-1747 lent by Intesa Sanpaolo, next to the museum's Tiepolos. On the third floor is the Museo della fotografia, the photography museum, with Friuli in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. You go round the castle along the roggia di Palma, the water channel that runs along its side. On the east side is the Liceo Stellini: the building had just been completed in 1915 when Cadorna's Supreme Command moved in, and from here the war was directed until Caporetto; a plaque in the entrance hall recalls it. On the square there is also the sanctuary of the Beata Vergine delle Grazie. It is the place to let children run between one museum and the next

The rogge and via Zanon

Walk · free entry · 46.06290, 13.23216

via Antonio Zanon, 33100 Udine (UD)

Udine has no river: its water comes from two medieval channels, the roggia di Udine and the roggia di Palma, taken from the Torre stream about fifteen kilometres to the north, at the point controlled by the Savorgnan family, who were called for this reason "lords of the waters". They do not cross the centre but run round it, along the line of the old walls. The most beautiful stretch is via Zanon, where the roggia di Udine runs uncovered alongside the street, with little bridges and houses on the water, and continues along via del Gelso and borgo Grazzano; the roggia di Palma instead passes through piazza Primo Maggio and runs all the way to the moats of Palmanova. North of the city the roggia di Udine is flanked by the ciclabile delle rogge, the cycle path of the rogge

Passariano, 33033 Codroipo (UD)

the villa of the Manin family, the family of the last doge of Venice, Lodovico Manin, who used it in summer before and after his abdication in 1797. The core is from 1578; the monumental villa was built over a century from 1651: Domenico Rossi designed the piazza Quadra, the square courtyard (1707), and the piazza Tonda, the round one (1718), closed by the two exedrae, and the central block was crowned around 1750 to a design by Giorgio Massari. From 27 August to 22 October 1797 Napoleon lived here, with Josephine, during the negotiations with Austria that ended with the Treaty of Campoformido of 17 October, the one that gave Venice to Austria. Behind is the park, about twenty hectares redesigned in the English style in the nineteenth century, with ponds and great trees: dogs may go in, but not in the rooms. There are two large free car parks south of the villa. From 14 November 2026 to 21 February 2027 the eastern exedra holds the exhibition "Rinascite. The sanctuary of Castelmonte

Church · free entry · 46.09424, 13.52034

località Castelmonte, 33040 Prepotto (UD)

the oldest Marian sanctuary in Friuli, at 618 metres, on top of a mountain above Cividale, seven kilometres away, and a good half hour from Udine. It is a small fortified village, with walls and pilgrims' houses around the church; the first written record is from 16 June 1175. Lightning set it on fire in 1469, the earthquakes of 1511 and 1513 damaged it, and since 1913 Capuchin friars have looked after it. On the high altar is the Black Madonna, a stone statue of 1479, and along the corridors thousands of painted votive offerings, which young people look at one by one: accidents, falls, wars, narrow escapes. From the open space you see the plain as far as the sea and, to the east, the Natisone Valleys and Slovenia

Opening hours according to the sanctuary, every day without a break from 7:30 to 18:00 in winter time and until 19:00 in summer time; Sunday and holiday Masses at 8:00, 10:00, 11:30, 15:30 and 17:00 · 0432 731094 · santuariocastelmonte.it · info@santuariocastelmonte.it

When

Events

Udine's calendar is read from its squares and from the villages around. The year begins with fire and with the sword: on the morning of Epiphany the Messa dello Spadone, the Mass of the great sword, at Cividale, and in the evening the Pignarûl Grant of Tarcento, the great bonfire. In February the Carnival floats come down via Mercatovecchio, in April the Asian cinema of the Far East Film Festival arrives, in summer jazz in the castle and Mittelfest at Cividale. In September Palmanova goes back to the seventeenth or the nineteenth century and Friuli Doc fills the centre with the flavours of the whole region; in November the fair of Santa Caterina and Idea Natale return, and then the Christmas lights. Every month there is an antiques market, in Udine on the third Sunday, in San Daniele on the last.

Remember

Useful tips

  • Monday is not Udine's day: the Civici Musei close, that is the castle and Casa Cavazzini, and on Tuesday the Museo Diocesano and the Museo del Duomo. The Museo Diocesano can be visited only by booking
  • With children: the Moors of the Torre dell'Orologio on the hour, the lions of Saint Mark to count between the square, the tower and the Arco Bollani, the castle prison, and the lawn of the Giardin Grande, in piazza Primo Maggio, for running about between one museum and the next. At the Civici Musei you do not pay up to 18, and a family with an underage child pays the reduced price for everyone
  • Anyone staying in the region for a few days should look at the FVGcard of the tourist board: with it you get in free to the Civici Musei, the Museo Diocesano, the Tempietto of Cividale and the galleries of Palmanova
  • Udine is the base for the surroundings: Cividale to the east, with the replacement bus for the train or by motorhome; Palmanova to the south, on the road to Aquileia and Grado; San Daniele to the north-west, with the lake of Ragogna; Villa Manin towards Pordenone. Gorizia is about forty kilometres away, beyond the Colli Orientali
  • On the days of Friuli Doc, in mid September, and of the Far East Film Festival, at the end of April, the centre is full: the Comune's area has six places, and it is worth arriving early or keeping the Fagagna campsite in reserve

Udine · part two

and then?

What to do, what to taste, and where to go tomorrow.

Taste

Udine eats like Friuli, a cuisine of the mountains and the countryside, and its institution is the osteria, where you drink the tajut, the glass of white wine taken at the counter in the middle of the morning or before dinner, with a piece of cheese or salami. The dish of all Friuli is frico, cheese cooked in a pan, already described in the fifteenth century by Maestro Martino, the cook of the patriarch of Aquileia: crunchy, made of cheese alone, or soft, with potatoes and onion, and polenta alongside. The cheese is Montasio DOP, born in the mountain dairies of the Julian and Carnic Alps with the Benedictines of Moggio, which you buy fresh (60 to 120 days), mezzano, semi-aged (4 to 10 months), or stagionato, aged (over 10 months). From Carnia come cjarsons, a filled pasta that is sweet and savoury at once, with raisins, herbs and cinnamon, dressed with melted butter and smoked ricotta. In winter you eat musetto e brovada: a cooking sausage made with the pig's snout, served with brovada, white turnips fermented in grape pomace, DOP since 2011. About twenty kilometres away is San Daniele, with its prosciutto DOP. The dessert is the gubana of the Natisone Valleys, a spiral of leavened dough filled with walnuts, raisins, pine nuts and dried fruit, which is also eaten soaked in grappa or slivovitz. In the glass, the wines of the Colli Orientali del Friuli, the eastern hills between Udine and Cividale: Friulano, Ribolla gialla, Refosco dal peduncolo rosso, Schioppettino, and as dessert wines Picolit and Ramandolo. Frico, in a motorhome, needs only a hob, a non-stick pan and a lid.
