On the summit of Plan de Corones, at 2275 metres, there are two museums four hundred metres apart, and you visit them in the same morning. Lumen occupies the old top station and tells the story of mountain photography: the first images from 1849 lined up year by year, bellows cameras in their cases, the wall of postcards sent from mountain huts, the large prints of today's photographers. MMM Corones stands on the other side of the plateau, set into the rock inside Zaha Hadid's concrete, and is the last of Reinhold Messner's six museums: inside there are ropes, pitons, crampons and the words of those who went up. From both, the windows look out over the Val Pusteria, and the view is part of the exhibition.

Getting there

  • You do not drive the motorhome up: you leave it in Brunico and take the cable car. The Kronplatz 2000 leaves from Riscone and arrives at the top station, which is to say inside Lumen
  • MMM Corones is on the other side of the summit: you cross the plateau on foot, on the level, over packed snow
  • In winter that stretch is a ski piste: you walk to one side, and you need shoes that hold on packed ice
  • Anyone skiing reaches both with their skis on and leaves them outside

  • At Lumen the historic cameras are on loan from the Tirol Archiv Photographie, and the route climbs from the first mountain daguerreotypes up to digital, with the 1999 case and the phone case
  • At MMM Corones the piece that stays with you is the pair of nailed boots from 1937, back from the Nanga Parbat expedition that ended under an avalanche
  • On the summit there is also the Concordia 2000 Peace Bell, which rings every day at noon
  • At 2275 metres it is cold even in the sun: inside the museums it is warm, between the two it is not
  • Reinhold Messner's other museum nearby is the MMM Ripa, down in Brunico castle: they are two different visits, and they fit into the same trip
