Pedalling through History: The Levanto–Bonassola–Framura Cycle-Pedestrian Trail and the Charm of Ligurian Villages
If you dream of a Ligurian experience that combines the relaxation of a flat walk, breathtaking sea views, and the discovery of ancient villages, the Maremonti Cycle Path is the perfect route for you. Stretching for about 5.5 – 6 km, this trail connects Levanto, Bonassola, and Framura and is a gem carved from the old, decommissioned coastal railway line; it’s not just a path, but an invitation to slow down, explore an authentic Liguria, and enjoy every single, incredible glimpse of the sea.
Get ready to hop on your bike (or slip on some comfortable shoes) for an incredibly scenic journey through illuminated tunnels and flashes of deep blue.

a Dive into Nature and Industrial Archaeology
The route is known for being easy and completely flat, perfect for families, casual cyclists, or anyone simply looking for a peaceful seaside walk.
You can easily start from Levanto (where renting a bike is simple) or from Framura. The route offers an exciting alternation:
The Tunnels: Former railway tunnels, now well-lit and cool, still echoing with the past (you can even see the layers of ash from old locomotives on the walls!). Walking or cycling through them is an experience in itself, adding a touch of adventure.
Sea Views: Between one tunnel and the next, the world opens up into natural terraces and balconies overlooking the cliffs. The contrast between the darkness of the tunnels and the dazzling light of the Ligurian Sea is simply unforgettable.
Access to Coves: Along the route, you’ll have the chance to descend to small beaches and hidden coves — perfect for a refreshing break and a dip in crystal-clear waters.

“Beyond the tunnels lie sky and sea.”
Three villages, three Ligurian souls; but the true beauty of this route lies in the villages it connects, each with its own unique character.
Levanto:
The Gateway to the Cinque Terre
Levanto is the ideal starting point — an elegant and lively village, often considered the northern “gateway” to the Cinque Terre.
Don’t Miss: Stroll through the historic center, admire the black-and-white striped façade of the Church of Saint Andrew, and visit the charming Medieval Loggia. Head up to the Castle of San Giorgio for a breathtaking panoramic view.
For the Active: Levanto boasts a wide beach and is a landmark for surfers in Liguria, especially when the Libeccio wind brings perfect waves.
Bonassola:
la Perla Nascosta
After about 2.5 km of cycling, you’ll reach Bonassola — a little corner of paradise.
Atmosphere: This seaside village is smaller and quieter than Levanto, with colorful houses overlooking a charming bay.
Beach and Breaks: Its beach is perfect for an ice-cream stop or a quick lunch. If you have time, take a short detour to Punta del Carlino for a spectacular view of the cliffs.
“Our friends can also enjoy the Ligurian Sea.”
“A well-deserved reward at the end of the journey.”
Framura:
“A widespread and untamed village”
Framura is the endpoint (or starting point) — and perhaps the wildest and least touristy of the three. It’s not a single village, but a collection of five small hamlets scattered between the sea and the hills.
The Little Harbor: The cycle path ends near its small and charming harbor, nestled between two rocks — an intimate spot, perfect for those seeking peace and quiet.
The Discovery: Leave your bike behind and explore on foot the hamlets of Setta, Costa, Ravecca, Anzo, and Castagnola. In particular, the hamlet of Costa boasts the Carolingian Watchtower and the Church of San Martino, offering breathtaking views.

Travel Tips
If you start from Levanto, look for the entrance along the seafront. If you prefer to begin in Framura, the path is easily accessible near the small harbor — either by elevator or via a short staircase from the train station.
b>Travel Time: By bike, the one-way route takes about 20–30 minutes, plus time for stops in the villages. On foot, plan for roughly one hour each way.
Bike Rentals: You’ll find bike rental points in Levanto, Bonassola, and Framura (often offering E-bikes as well). Hourly rates are very affordable.
Weather: Since much of the route is covered, it’s enjoyable even on hotter days. However, spring and autumn offer the best colors and scents of the Mediterranean scrub.
